About ACMC - our People & Values

Action for Congo's Mothers and Children (ACMC) was formed in the light of the founder's personal experience of the Congo to channel aid specifically to those dedicated groups and individuals who are on the ground providing direct, beneficial support to those who are most affected by Congo's continuing problems, the mothers and children among the rural poor.

ACMC is a non-political, not-for-profit charitable organisation registered with the UK Charity Commission with the aim of reducing poverty among the rural poor in Congo (DRC), especially families.

About the Founder

ACMC was founded by Mrs Joseé Wilkinson, a mother of four children, and professional teacher in adult education in Birmingham, UK. Joseé was born in the Congo and visits Congo frequently.

The founder of ACMC has substantial personal experience of the Congo. She knows about the suffering that is occurring and about the tremendous long-lasting benefits that can be achieved by providing suitable equipment, support and sustainable skills.

She has travelled extensively to remote areas in the north-east of the Congo, areas rarely visited by mainstream charities and NGOs due to the extremely arduous conditions and general lawlessness in the region.

She has first-hand experience of the high levels of poverty and suffering of mothers and children from a range of factors. As well as general poverty, the strife that has hit Congo over many years has caused terrible suffering.

Joseé felt that she had to do whatever she could to make a difference.

Joseé co-ordinates ACMC's fundraising and programmes of basic help to families living at subsistence level in rural Congo.

Visit to DRC

Joseé, the founder of ACMC, travelled to the DRC in 2009 via Kampala in Uganda to meet Monseigneur Maurice Arakayo of Watsa (see map on 'History of Poverty' page) and the Cure of Gombari (small town between Mungwere and Bunia) whom she had met on her previous visit. The purpose of the trip was to buy supplies since it was easier to transport goods from Uganda to the North East of the country. ACMC managed to purchase an electricity generator for Gombari's hospital, a motorcycle, a chainsaw, a computer, printer, photocopier and a couple of sewing machines to help some victims of rape have the means of earning a living.

ACMC is a UK-based charity to relieve poverty & sickness in Congo.
