ACMC Helps Grandmother With Eye Problems
On 30 January 2015, the charity ACMC arranged for a 74-year old grandmother and widow from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to come to the United Kingdom for medical treatment. It was hoped we could offer this lady surgery for her severely damaged left knee but unfortunately after a series of medical consultations, it became obvious that the damage was irreversible and nothing could be done to improve her mobility.
However, while she was here we discovered that she also had a serious eye problem having suffered a long history of glaucoma and she urgently needed surgery to her left eye. This unfortunate lady had already lost sight in her right eye!!!
On 13 April, our patient was admitted to the QE Hospital in Birmingham and underwent successful cataract surgery to the left eye. We are so grateful to the consultant and staff at the Queen Elizabeth hospital who made this possible.
On 27 April, when she was feeling the benefits of her eye surgery, we organised a Quiz Night where she was able to recount her story and tell us about the difficult living conditions in the DRC. She thanked everybody for their support and contributions and praised the efforts and dedication of all concerned.
On behalf of ACMC, I would like to offer my personal thanks which come from the bottom of my heart for all of your efforts and contributions on the night. The money raised helped to cover some of the costs of the above.
Our patient travelled back to the DRC on 6 June and is enjoying life through improved vision and a feeling of goodwill knowing that we are not forgetting the plight of others so less fortunate than ourselves. She misses England and all the people who showed so much compassion towards her.
